Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the option to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
